The Health Benefits of Regular Dog Grooming

Booking regular grooming appointments for your dog doesn’t just keep him pretty, it keeps him clean, healthy, and happy! With proper grooming, you can eliminate mats, knots, ticks, fleas, shedding, and prevent other health conditions from developing. Here we take a closer look at the many health benefits of regular dog grooming.

Detection & Prevention

During your dog’s regular grooming session at Woofgang Bakery and Grooming, a trained groomer will look for rashes, lesions, inflammation, lumps, or infections that may be present. This is especially helpful if your dog suffers from seasonal skin issues and allergies. Early detection is key to preventing major health conditions from developing!

Maintains a Healthy Coat & Fur

To properly maintain your dog’s coat and fur, regular grooming is a must! At Woofgang, we recommend bathing your dog at least once every three months, however this varies depending on the type of breed and how often your dog gets super dirty. Not only does a bath keep your dog clean and smelling nice, but it also helps remove harmful bacteria from their coat and skin.

It is important to note that bathing too often (more than once every two weeks) can disrupt the balance of the skin and coat’s natural oils that keep them healthy. It’s a good idea to talk to your vet about how often you should bathe your pup.

Reduces Mats & Knots

Some dogs love being brushed, while others run away at just the site of a brush! Either way, brushing is a must-do in terms of maintenance, especially for long-haired, non-shedding breeds that are prone to getting tangles and knots. For dogs with regular coats, brushing can help distribute oils to provide a shiny coat and healthy skin and remove loose hair so new fur can grow. It’s also a great opportunity to check your dog for fleas, ticks, and other pests that may be present.

Keeps Claws Trimmed

When claws get too long, they can start to curl under and become painful. It can also cause toes to push outwards which can affect the form of their feet, their posture, and how they walk. While you can trim your dog’s claws yourself, we highly recommend having a professional groomer do the job. It’s not an easy task!

Relieves Anal Gland Discomfort

Have you ever seen your dog scoot his bum across the floor? While it looks kind of cute and funny, your dog is trying to relieve discomfort! Biting around this area is another sign that the glands are full and need to be expressed. Until then, your dog will be uncomfortable and may even have difficulty sitting properly! Expressing anal glands is another job you can do at home; however, it’s often better left to the professionals (Unless you’re okay with squeezing the glands to release the contents via small openings that are on either side of the anus).
